Barcelona [Spain]September 5, 2008 (ANI): New research has shown that infants and young children are less likely to get croup from fish oil and vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy.

Croup is a viral pneumonia that can affect young children. Croup causes a distinctive ‘barking’ cough and hoarseness. It can also cause difficulty breathing. Croup is common in children and is usually mild. Some children will require hospital treatment and breathing support.
The study covered 736 pregnant women that COPSAC had been caring for since 2010. The study involved 736 pregnant women who were being cared for by COPSAC since 2010. One group was provided with high-dose vitamin D (2800 international units per daily) and fish oil that contained long-chain, n-3, polyunsaturated oils (2.4 grams), while the second received standard-dose vitamins D (400 international units per days) and oil. The final group was provided standard-dose vitamin D. The supplements were taken by all women from the 24th week of their pregnancy to the week following the birth of their babies. The researchers and the women did not know which supplements they were taking at the end of this study.

The children were monitored by researchers until the age of three years. Croup was diagnosed either by a doctor or through their medical records. The total number of cases of croup was 97.
Children whose mothers ingested fish oil had an overall 11% risk of developing croup compared with 17% for children whose mothers ingested olive oil (38% less). Children whose mothers were high-dose vitamin-D users had an 11% chance of developing croup, as compared to the 18% risk in mothers who took standard-dose vitamin-D (a 40% decrease).
Dr Brustad reported that high-doses of vitamin D and fish oils could help prevent childhood croup. This is a cost-effective way to improve young children’s health.
“We don’t know the exact mechanisms that explain the benefits of vitamin D or fish oil. However, it is possible that they stimulate the immune system and help children and babies clear more infections.
COPSAC has already explored other potential benefits of vitamin and fish oil during pregnancy. These include its effects on bone growth, the central nervous systems, body composition, asthma, and even skin color. They plan to continue following the children and investigate why certain children are more susceptible to infection in childhood.
Professor Rory Morty of the University of Heidelberg is the chair of European Respiratory Society’s Lung and Airway Development Biology group. However, he was not involved in this research. He said, “We know that lung health can be affected during pregnancy in both babies and young children.” Babies whose mothers smoke have poorer lung health. We are seeing more evidence that certain elements of a mother’s diet can affect or hinder a baby’s lung development.
“This research suggests that babies and young kids could benefit from taking fish oil and vitamin D supplements during pregnancy. This research could support new recommendations for supplementation in pregnancy. We are interested to see more research in this area. Women who are pregnant should consult their doctor before they take supplements. (ANI)
