Horror is an intrinsic part of motherhood. There are many themes to consider, including the bodily horror of having something grow inside you and the effects that pregnancy has on how one thinks about and acts. Andy Muschietti’s directorial debut Mama This was Released in 2013, the film stars Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj-Coster Wildau. After 2008’s financial crisis, a deranged stockbroker murdered his wife and coworkers before fleeing to an isolated cabin with his daughters to kill them. He is then attacked and killed by an unknown entity after he attempts to save them. Lucas, Lucas’ twin brother finds the abandoned girls five years later and rescues them. However, he didn’t know that the entity from the cabin had been following them.
The girls discover that they are not the only ones who have returned from the woods. Lucas is attacked, and is left in a coma. The girls refer to Mama as the one who cared for and protected them in the cabin. Mama’s true origins are revealed as the story progresses. Mama needs to be reunited and reconnected with her child to save her children before she takes her two daughters to the afterlife.
2014 Austrian psychological horror Good night Mommy Elias and Lukas, twins, begin to believe their mother may not have returned from surgery after all. Mother’s cosmetic surgery results in her face being completely covered up. Only her eyes and mouth are visible. Her appearance is a concern to the children. However, she begins acting differently. She ignores Lukas and lashed out at Elias when Lukas misbehaves.
The boys tie her up and then burn her if she doesn’t respond in the right way. They glue her mouth shut and then open it again to allow her to eat. As Mother tries desperately to convince her sons she is their true parent, tension builds and becomes violent.
2021 Netflix German British film Blood Red Sky The movie is about a flight hijacked by a vampire. Nadja and Elias board a plane headed to New York so Nadja can get treatment for her leukemia. A group of men, including the copilot, kill the pilot and the air marshals as the plane takes off and then sabotage and destroy the black box. They demand ransom for the plane and they spot Elias, Nadja and others trying to hide. Nadja gets shot.
Nadja, unfortunately for the hijackers isn’t dead from the gunshot. Instead, Nadja is a vampire on a mission protecting her son. The fight to recover the hijacked plane starts with Nadja trying to control her bloodlust and failing to control the infective passengers and hijackers.
A24 and Ari Aster collaborate for the first time in 2018. Hereditary In a short time, the film has been a classic in horror. Toni Collette plays Annie Graham, a matriarch and miniature artist, married to Steve (Gabriel Byrne). They have two children, Charlie (Milly Shapiro) and Peter (Alex Wolff). After Annie’s mother Ellen dies, the family falls apart. They are constantly beset by tragedy, supernatural events, and more.
Collette’s depiction of a mother in distress has been widely praised for her unsettling mood and nerve-shattering screams. It would be spoilery to say more about the plot, but horror fans should see the terrifying and claustrophobic family story.
Written, directed and starring British comedian Alice Lowe. Prevenge It is a horror comedy that will shock you. The story centers on Ruth, a widow who deals with the death of her husband and the imminent birth of their child. Ruth believes her unborn child is hungry for revenge and is compelled to kill the perpetrators of the accident that killed her husband. Ruth grows more sadistic as her daughter’s birthday draws nearer. As her baby grows closer, the comedy slowly fades from the film. Ruth begins to enjoy the stalking and killing of others.
Filmed in just 2 weeks. Lowe was very pregnant. Prevenge This is a thoughtful and dark meditation on how terrifying it can be to suddenly raise a child without anyone else. Lowe beautifully portrays the terrifying spiral of a woman, alone and fearful. It offers rare insight for women into motherhood and how to deal with loneliness.
