Houston Prenatal Chiropractor Changes the Narrative, Mortality Rate, and For Black Women with Culturally Competent Caregivers
— Dr. Marquetta Giles
HOUSTON (TEXAS), October 18, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Dr. Marquetta, DC, a Houston Prenatal Chiropractor and co-founder of Spinal Perceptions Chiropractic and Wellness Center, hopes to change the narrative about health for Black women and their infants, who have high rates of infant and maternal mortality.
Dr. Giles is among a few black female chiropractors who are certified in prenatal chiropractic. She provides care and education to expectant mothers, new moms, and infant and child patients from all backgrounds.
“The U.S. is the only developed country in the world where the maternal mortality rate is rising, with a clear racial disparity,” said Dr. Giles. “The numbers surrounding Black maternal health historically, and still to this day, are disturbing. Black women are three times more likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth than White women, regardless of income, education or lifestyle, and we as a healthcare industry, and as members of the community, need to do more to change those numbers.”
While many state elected officials are asking for more funding to boost maternal health for Black women in their states, Dr. Giles works to improve outcomes for Black women in Houston by providing education and culturally competent holistic health care that focuses on the mental and physical health of all pregnant women, from conception through to delivery. Spinal Perceptions provides treatment and care that is customized to the individual needs of each patient and effectively accounts for their cultural and social backgrounds.
Prenatal Chiropractors like Dr. Giles work with the body’s ability to adapt and function the way it is designed to. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is crucial to normal physiologic function of the mother and baby at birth and throughout pregnancy. This helps to prepare the pelvis for a more comfortable pregnancy and birth. It creates balance in pelvic structures and muscles, ligaments, and allows babies to breathe easier.
Greater freedom to grow and move, without any restrictions on its formation of cranium and spine. Proper fetal positioning can significantly reduce dystocia (painful labor), and the birth trauma that results from intervention.
Dr. Giles pointed out that Black women in the past have had difficulty accessing high-quality healthcare because they lack a strong support system. Dr. Giles works to increase awareness about self-care and healthcare for Black women, in addition to the many benefits of prenatal chiropractic. She helps women to improve their health, and their baby’s health, by providing them with nutrition, physical and mental fitness advice as well as resources throughout their pregnancy and delivery.
