October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month. Each year, approximately 24,000 babies are stillborn in America, according to the CDC.
Erin Engelke, Calm Water’s Executive Director of Children and Families, is opening up a free support group to adults who are grieving the loss of a pregnancy, an infant or infertility.
Engelke stated that infant and pregnancy loss are two forms of loss that have some stigma.
Engelke has experienced loss and she knows the importance of being open to others.
Engelke stated, “I happen to belong to one of those women.” Engelke said, “I have lost four of my children before I had mine. I know the grief, pain, and sorrow that comes with that loss.”
Erin created a space for families and women through her struggle.
Engelke stated, “For me, personally I was isolated, and that is exactly the opposite of what should have been done.” “That’s why calm waters exist.”
Calm Waters offers a variety of support groups for people dealing with death and divorce, as well as a new program that assists those in prison.

Engelke said, “We want to create an environment where couples and women can safely share what is happening.” To confront those overwhelming feelings of guilt, shame, and despair.”
From Dec. 19 to December 19, the support group meets at 501 N. Walker in Oklahoma City, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
