A new policy will offer parents who have lost their baby during pregnancy up to two weeks of paid parental leave.
If someone is affected more than once, the allowance can be used for the individual, their partner, or surrogate.
Councillors approved the policy at a meeting of the finance, resources and customer services policy board, with a report stating it would support staff’s return to work with “compassion, flexibility, practical and emotional support in all circumstances.”
“It’s fantastic to see because people can take absence or sick leave for this but to have a policy set out is great,” said Councillor Jacqueline Cameron. “I’m really pleased to see it.”
Councillor Alison Ann-Dowling added: “It extends not just to women who have suffered the loss of a pregnancy but also their partners and extended family members when appropriate.
“The loss of a pregnancy doesn’t just affect the woman, although obviously it predominantly affects the pregnant woman, so I’m very happy to see that and fully support the policy.”
People who lose their pregnancy after 24 weeks, regardless of whether it is stillbirth or neonatal are eligible to maternity benefits.
The council also signed the Miscarriage Association promise, which requires employers to make sure they understand and implement rules regarding pregnancy-related leave, create supportive work environments, and have a policy.
The pledge was also taken by East Renfrewshire, another Scottish council.
