The academy revealed the titles of features eligible to compete in the three categories of animated, documentary, and international films in anticipation of the start of the Oscars voting.
The voting is only open for four days. The shortlists in the 10 categories will be released Dec. 21. These nominations, along with 13 others, will be announced on January 24, 2023. The 95th Academy Awards will be held March 12, 2023.
Animated Feature (27 entries).
Only academy members from any branch can vote for this award. Each member ranks their top five choices. Then, a multi-step process of counting narrows down the contenders to the five final nominees.

Documentary Feature (144 entry)
Each branch member is given DVD screens of all 144 entries. They are assigned to view one-fifth, but encouraged to see as many as possible. Each branch member lists their top 15 picks and votes for them on a preferential ballot. The results are then compiled to create a short list with 15 potential contenders. Members are encouraged to see the films on this list and to cast preferential votes with their top five choices.

The academy members from any branch can vote for this award. Over a two-month period, they will watch up to a dozen of the 92 Foreign Language Film submissions. The academy will score the films from 6-10 and the top 10 vote-getters will advance to round 2. The academy membership can vote for the five final nominees if they can verify that they have seen all of the semi-finalists. All academy members will be able to see the five nominees and vote for the winner.
