Nicole Richie was born into the spotlight, as she is the daughter Lionel Richie. However, Nicole Richie prefers not to make her children public.
Former reality star, Joel Madden shares two children with her. She has been married since 2010, and they are daughter Harlow (15) and son Sparrow (13).
Richie, who is protective of her children and shares few photos on social media of them, has been honest about her parenting and her struggles as a mother.
“Saying that it is difficult sometimes is very comforting for other women to hear — just knowing that it is a juggle,” the mom of two told PEOPLE in September 2015. “It’s just about doing what you can, finding the balance in your own life … Every family is different, every household is set up differently and it’s just a constant game of prioritizing — it’s like a puzzle every day.”
Richie says she is thankful to be raising children in a period when mothers feel more comfortable talking about these issues.
She said, “I know that my mom didn’t have it,” in a second interview with PEOPLE. Women are no longer embarrassed to admit that a task is difficult. I worry that I am not doing a great job. “I think it’s so amazing that women are helping each other out in this space.”
When asked about raising teenagers she replied, “I’ll have to see what I’m like when they are teenagers. But I also think it depends on who they become.”
The designer of clothing added, “I do not believe in parenting that is black-and white.” “I have to learn as I go.”
Richie learned a great deal about parenting in the past few years, particularly during the COVID-19 Pandemic. In July 2021 she told PEOPLE the most important parenting lessons she had learned during quarantine.
She added that spending time outside with her family was beneficial during this difficult time. “I’ve always said that being outside in nature was important. But it became more necessary once everyone sat at their computers and Zoom work. “We had to make a real effort to be outside in nature and to connect with the Earth.”

Harlow Madden (15)
Harlow Winter Kate Madden was born to Richie in Los Angeles, on January 11, 2008.
Harlow, the daughter of a famous fashionista has inherited her mother’s love for beauty. Richie, who was the face for Urban Decay’s Naked Petite Heat Palette in 2018, told PEOPLE her daughter, then 10 years old at the time, loved makeup and had her own beauty routine. “She is a completely different creature than I am,” declared the star. She should be the face of this campaign. She’s like a lip gloss, a liquid eyeliner, a mascara, a glitter or a liner. She’s in it.”
Harlow was a more introverted child when she was younger and preferred to remain out of the spotlight. Richie told Harlow when she was 8 that sometimes her daughter didn’t come. “She is a bit more reserved. She will sit on the bus doing art. “The bus is awesome.”
Richie has also raised her daughter as a feminist. Richie and Harlow attended the Women’s March as a mother-daughter pair. Harlow had expressed her desire to attend.
“She was aware of it. She heard about it the previous year.” Richie told PEOPLE in her 2018 interview that she went to the festival last year and a few friends of hers also went. “She and her friends decided to go. Their decision. She and four of her friends joined us. It was great. “I was so glad that she was there.”
Richie said, “I would like her to feel comfortable looking at any adult female or male for the rest or her life. I want her to have confidence in her voice and feelings. She should be able use her instincts and not worry about anyone else. “I want her confidence in her voice, and to be able to express herself with power.”
Harlow’s passion for beauty, feminism and fashion could lead her to a career as a designer of clothing like her mother. “My daughter is a fashionista, but she also has a unique style. It’s not my fault. Richie, a fashion-savvy mother in August of 2021, said that her daughter was always taking her clothes. “I’ve just started using a Sharpie to write an N on everything I own so that no one can steal my clothes,” Richie said in August 2021. [she knows it’s mine].”
Richie and husband keep their kids’ lives private. They seldom post pictures of them on social networks. The clothing designer marked her daughter Harlow’s 13thbirthday on Instagram with a rare throwback of Harlow at 3 months.
Here you are, 3 months old. Today you turn 13. ♥️Richie wrote the caption. “You light up my life with your presence, & have no problem lighting up my bedroom with your bright phone screen. It is wonderful to watch you grow into the woman you are. “I feel so blessed to be your mom.”
Harlow is close to her family and her aunt Sofia (Richie’s younger sibling) in particular.
Sofia once captioned “My favourite trio” a photo she took of herself, her sister and her niece.
Sparrow Madden 13
Riche’s son Sparrow James Madden Midnight was born on September 9, 2009.
Although Sparrow’s nickname is the same as that of his older sibling, this was not an intentional naming scheme. “I didn’t even realize it [both of their names] Richie said, “It ended with ‘ow’.” A few months after Richie’s birth. “We have to agree on something, but we can’t always do that. I liked Sparrow in Captain Jack Sparrow and he did too, for different reasons.”
Sparrow’s style is unique, just like that of his sister and mother, but it closely resembles the look of his rock-star dad.
Richie told Sparrow when he was only 3 years old, “Sparrow is dressing himself but he is very particular.” “So he needs the bandana tied around the belt, you know how Joel does it … he has to have all of his sleeves cut off of his shirts. He has a little mohawk!”
Sparrow wore the same clothes as his father even after he became older. “Sparrow is his own man.” Richie stated in 2016 that Sparrow likes to wear black, just like his father.
Madden posted a rare picture of his son to celebrate his 11th Birthday on Instagram.
“Happy 11th birthday to my baby son!” I love you Sparrow ❤️here’s to many more years of being best friends and me embarrassing you,” the Good Charlotte frontman wrote alongside a throwback photo of Sparrow sitting on his shoulders.
